Renault Group has been developing electric motors without rare earths, using electrically excited synchronous motors (EESM) instead of permanent-magnet synchronous motors. This technology has been used in various Renault models since 2011 and is expected to continue with the next generation of EESM motors in 2027. The new motors will have a higher output of 200 kW and reduced carbon impact. Renault's approach aims to avoid reliance on countries that produce rare earths, such as China.
