The study showed that changes in the gut microbiome with age can lead to inflammation, which impairs the vagus nerve's ability to signal to the brain. By stimulating the vagus nerve, the researchers were able to restore memory function in old mice to that of young animals. The findings suggest a potential link between the gut microbiome and age-related cognitive decline.
