A study explored the neural and behavioral consequences of using a large language model (LLM) assistant for essay writing. Participants were divided into groups using LLM, search engines, or no tools, and their cognitive load and essay quality were assessed. The study found that LLM users showed reduced cognitive engagement and underperformed at neural, linguistic, and behavioral levels compared to those who did not use LLMs. The results raise concerns about the long-term educational implications of relying on LLMs.
