The study found that during these lapses, CSF flows out of the brain, leading to impaired attention. The researchers suggest that the brain is trying to compensate for the loss of cleansing that normally occurs during sleep, but this comes at the cost of attention loss. This phenomenon is linked to other physiological changes, including decreases in breathing and heart rate, and constriction of the pupils.
