A study investigated the neurobiological mechanisms underlying altered states of consciousness induced by high ventilation breathwork (HVB) accompanied by music. The research found that HVB can evoke subjective experiential states similar to those induced by psychedelic substances, including euphoria, bliss, and perceptual differences. The study used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine the effects of HVB on brain activity and found that the intensity of altered states was proportional to cardiovascular sympathetic activation and changes in cerebral perfusion. The findings suggest that HVB may offer a non-pharmacological alternative to psychedelic treatments for certain psychiatric and physiological conditions.
