A former OpenAI board member, Helen Toner, has revealed that CEO Sam Altman was briefly ousted due to lying to the board multiple times, including about the company's ownership structure and safety processes. Altman allegedly withheld information and misrepresented facts, damaging the board's trust in him. The board's attempt to remove Altman was short-lived, as he was reinstated less than a week later after staff threatened to quit and speculation arose that Microsoft might poach his team. Toner has since resigned from her role as a board member.
