The article proposes a novel definition of life in terms of Kantian Wholes that achieve Catalytic Closure, Constraint Closure, and Spatial Closure. It unites two established mathematical theories, Collectively Autocatalytic Sets and the Theory of the Adjacent Possible, to suggest that life is an expected phase transition in the evolving universe. The authors propose new ways to study the phylogeny of metabolisms and search for life on exoplanets. The article presents a theoretical framework for understanding the emergence of life in the universe.
