Researchers found that anxious individuals' brains redirect emotion regulation from the lateral frontal pole to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. This shift is associated with increased neuronal excitability and stronger amygdalofugal projections in the lateral frontal pole. The study suggests that this functional anatomical shift may contribute to the difficulties experienced by individuals with anxiety in controlling emotional action tendencies. The findings provide new insights into the neural mechanisms underlying anxiety and may lead to the development of targeted interventions.
