Apple's Mac laptops and iPads feature a hardware microphone disconnect that turns off the microphone when the lid is closed, preventing any software from accessing the microphone. This disconnect is implemented in hardware alone and is designed to prevent microphone audio data from being made available to any software. The feature is available on all Apple silicon-based Mac laptops and Intel-based Mac laptops with the Apple T2 Security Chip, as well as iPad models from 2020 onwards. The hardware disconnect is triggered by lid sensors that detect the physical closure of the lid or case.
