A study led by researchers from Tel Aviv University, MIT Sloan School of Management, and Bocconi University found a causal link between the use of Facebook and worsening mental health symptoms, including depression and anxiety, among American college students. The study analyzed data from the introduction of Facebook at 775 American colleges and the National College Health Assessment survey. The researchers found a statistically significant increase in reported mental health issues, including a 7% increase in severe depression and a 20% increase in anxiety disorders. The study suggests that unfavorable social comparisons on Facebook may contribute to these negative effects.
