A 17-year-old inventor, Robert Sansone, has designed a novel synchronous reluctance motor that could potentially transform the electric car industry by reducing the need for rare-earth magnets. His prototype, made from 3-D printed plastic, copper wires, and a steel rotor, showed 39% greater torque and 31% greater efficiency than existing motors. Sansone's design uses an additional magnetic field instead of air gaps to increase the saliency ratio and produce more torque. He plans to patent his technology and hopes it will be used in electric vehicles to make them more sustainable.
